Viral hepatitis is a disease that harms your liver, an organ inside your body with many important functions including the detoxification of your body. This injury can range from a small, self-limited injury to a more serious injury that could lead to permanent damage where the liver becomes stiff, a condition called cirrhosis. Cirrhosis could cause liver cancer and death. Symptoms of viral hepatitis include, nausea, vomiting, fever, dark-colored urine, light-colored bowel movements and yellow skin. Blood tests are available to accurately diagnose viral hepatitis. The most common types of viral hepatitis are A, B, and C. Viρal hepatitis A and hepatitis B can be prevented by vaccination. We don’t have a vaccine for viral hepatitis C but oral medications are available for the treatment of hepatitis C that can cure the disease with an efficacy up to 98%.
