Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a procedure that allows us to examine the lining for the large intestine (colon) and look for any abnormalities. The procedure involves the insertion of a colonoscope, which is a long, thin, and flexible tube with a camera and light at the end into the anus and advancing it all the way to where the colon and the small intestine meet. The colonoscope is then carefully withdrawn so that we are able to see all of the colonic lining. If there are any growths such as polyps, they can be removed during the procedure. If there is cause, biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken during the procedure as well.
Please refer to the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) website for a more detailed explanation.
