Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure in which we examine the lining of the sigmoid colon and rectum, the two lowest parts of the colon. The process is the same as a colonoscopy in that the colonoscope, a thin flexible tube with a camera and light at the end, is inserted into the anus and advanced to evaluate the lining of the lower colon. This procedure is a good option as in a number of instances it may not be necessary to evaluate the whole colon. The preparation for the flexible sigmoidoscopy is easier. Tissue can still be sampled and growths removed during this procedure.
Please refer to the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) website for a more detailed explanation.
