Ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a disease of a part of the digestive system called large intestine or colon. This occurs when the colon is inflamed and sores called ‘’ulcers’’ are developed. The disease usually presents with diarrhea that could be bloody, abdominal pain or cramps, and weakness. We do not know the etiology behind the ulcerative colitis but environmental factors and genetics both likely play a role in the disease. Here, we can diagnose ulcerative colitis by performing an endoscopic procedure called ‘’colonoscopy’’ or using a similar test calling ‘’sigmoidoscopy’’. With these tests, that are performed here in our clinic, using a flexible tube, called an endoscope, with a camera and a light on it, that we place into the rectum (the lower part of the large intestine), we see inside the colon to identify possible abnormalities. A number of imaging studies, blood and stool studies will help us to diagnose the severity and extent of the disease. We offer the latest medications to control this chronic disease and prevent complications that include colon cancer or colon resection from severe disease.
